In this 3-hour session taking place on Saturday, March 23rd from 1-4pm, local artist Susan Bulman will illustrate how to paint a variety of flowers in watercolours, and introduce techniques for painting a convincing transparent vase.

In the first half of the class, wet-on-wet or wet-on-dry techniques will be used to create forms of leaves and loose flower petals. Dry brush techniques will be used to further develop the flowers, adding the finer details. Flower outline shapes will be provided for those who are not confident in their drawing skills.

At the halfway point in the class, there will be a break for light refreshments before continuing.

The second half of the class will focus on creating transparencies with watercolour. Susan will provide instruction on how to capture these effects in watercolour to create a transparent vase for your bouquet. Participants may also choose to distribute flowers evenly across the page, select a reference image to work from, focus on a close-up, or select a different vessel for their bouquet. If working from a reference image, it is recommended that you print the image out rather than working from a photo on your phone, as this will allow you to more easily deal with composition. If you do not have access to a printer, please email your photo to [email protected] prior to the class to have it printed.

This class will also be a great inspiration as you plan flowers to plant in your garden this spring!
