Volunteering

Thanks to the many, many dedicated volunteers, the Muse has a strong and vital volunteer program. Through their enthusiasm, dedication, and involvement we are able to enhance the offerings of the Lake of the Woods Museum and Douglas Family Art Centre through educational programming, special events, exhibitions, and more.

In return, our volunteers enjoy being part of a progressive, creative team who believe that heritage and culture are vital to communities. As an organization, we recognize the invaluable contribution of volunteers in what we do, and we know that they are our biggest fans and greatest advocates. Our volunteers are of all ages, come from different backgrounds, and are passionate about sharing their time, talents, and energy with us.

By helping, our volunteers benefit in a variety of ways, including:

  • working in a relaxed and/or exciting environment (depending on the volunteer role)
  • contributing to a thriving and active museum and art centre
  • learning new skills
  • engaging their imaginations
  • building resume and career-related experiences
  • meeting new people
  • having fun!

Volunteers receive unlimited access to the galleries and exhibitions, gift shop discounts, special recognition events, reference letters, and more.

Please look through our Opportunities for Volunteers to learn about the types of volunteer roles we offer. As you will see some opportunities require more skill and experience than others, some require a greater commitment of time. We hope that you’ll find something that catches your interest. Please note that we are not always recruiting for certain positions, so we may not be able to accommodate you in your particular field of interest immediately, but trust that as we require assistance we will be in touch.

We would ask you to fill our a Volunteer Application Form and submit it to the Muse.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER

BECOME A VOLUNTEER

It’s our goal to ensure that every volunteer at the Muse has a great experience, and that they feel that they are contributing and appreciated.

If you are interested in being a volunteer, please review the following carefully. We want you to be as excited about being a volunteer at the Muse as we are in having you join us.

Understanding the Commitment

Review the job description we are recruiting for carefully, and note the tasks, shift times, and expectations of that role.

Think about what you are seeking in a volunteer role. Do you want to build on educational or career-related skills? Do you have an interest in certain aspects of museum work? Do you need volunteer hours for school? Do you want to work with children? Or do you just love museums and want to know more about the inner workings of them? Consider what is motivating you to volunteer at the Lake of the Woods Museum. By providing us with as much information as possible, we can ensure that you are meeting your own personal volunteering goals.

Consider what your availability is to volunteer. Are you available any time? Weekdays? Weekends? Only during winter months? How much time are you able to give? A few hours, a few weeks? The more you let us know about your availability, the better chance we have of finding a good match for you.

Determine what kind of role you’d like. Are you artistic? Maybe you can design posters, or help design exhibits. Are you considering a career in education? Perhaps you can assist with our educational programming. Are you a people-person? You’d be great working at our front reception desk and boutique.

Respect that we have a screening process in place. Candidates are selected for personal interviews based on suitability.

Understand the commitment. Our volunteer positions vary in their commitment levels. Are you able to fulfill the expectations of that role? We don’t want your volunteer commitment to be a burden to you so please be realistic about the time you have for us.
