Dynamic Design (10-14) – 8 weeks

In this 8-week session of art classes for children ages 10-14, we will explore design elements like pattern, symmetry, rhythm, and balance through a combination of two- and three-dimensional art projects.  The lessons will span a variety of artistic media and techniques including: drawing, painting, collage, origami, and printmaking. Participants will also learn about contemporary and historical artists that exemplify some of these design elements in their artworks.  Projects will include:

• Paisley Perfection — a closer look at the origins and history of this teardrop-shaped motif popular in textile design through a mixed media project.

• Repeat Patterns — inspired by William Morris, participants will learn how to turn any drawing into a repeat pattern.

• Tessellations — how to make repeating “tiles,” inspired by M.C. Escher.

• Comics as Art — a look at the art of Roy Lichtenstein, an artist who turned comic books into fine art.

• Op Art — how to create optical illusions.

• Notans — a Japanese term meaning “light-dark harmony.”

• Origami Mandalas — exploring balance and radial symmetry through the art of paper folding.

• Painting Music — interpreting rhythm and music through abstract painting, inspired by Paul Klee.

The course will run Wednesdays from 4:30-6:00pm from May 1 – June 19, 2024.The cost to register for this 8-week class is $275 (no tax), or $247.50 (no tax) for MUSE members. Limited to 12 participants. All materials are supplied.
