You are invited to join us for the local book launch of Levelling the Lake, authored by Jamie Benidickson.
With its central focus on the ongoing challenge of regulating water levels across the Lake of the Woods / Rainy watershed, Levelling the Lake explores resource and environmental management, including the work of the International Joint Commission over the past century. Where a valuable fishery, mining, varied forest operations, hydro-electric power production and recreational activity depend to some degree on water levels and effective environmental protection measures, much is at stake. Watershed governance is difficult in the best of circumstances, and still more so in a trans-boundary context where national, state, provincial and First Nations institutions are all involved in complex and interdependent decision-making processes.
Jamie teaches environmental law and legal history at the University of Ottawa. Much of his research for this book originated in files and archives housed by the Lake of the Woods Museum.
Copies of Jamie’s book will be available for purchase from the Museum’s Gift Shop.
