Instructor: Susan Bulman
In this 3-hour session taking place on Saturday, November 2nd from 1-4pm, local artist Susan Bulman will introduce participants to the essential techniques for watercolour painting. After learning the basics, participants will hone their “painting from life” skills with a still-life of fruits and vegetables, inspired by the harvests of summer.
The first hour will serve as an introduction to the medium of watercolour. Susan will discuss the materials used in watercolour painting — including different papers, paints, and types of brushes — and how these are used to create a variety of marks. Participants will spend a short time experimenting with colour and mark-making techniques, before learning about the basic techniques most often used in watercolour paintings to create different effects. Techniques covered will include: flat and graduated washes, dry-brush, wet on dry, wet in wet, glazing, and more!
A break for tea and cookies will follow, with time for questions and discussions.
After the break, each table will set up a still life on their tablet based on the harvests of summer. Susan will cover how to approach a still life painting, including tips on perspective, colour, light, and shadow. Attendees are encouraged to bring in their own fruits and vegetables for inspiration, although Susan will make sure there are plenty to go around!
