Presenter: Zachary Carlos Geyshick
Stop by the Douglas Family Art Centre from February 4-8 between 10am-2:30pm to witness the construction of a large double dreamcatcher by Zachary Carlos Geyshick.
Zachary Carlos Geyshick is an artist from Gakajiwanong Reservation, who currently resides in Kenora. He specializes in making dreamcatchers, which are used as protection from nightmares and bad thoughts. Zach says that he enjoys the inner peace, love, and good medicine that this art form brings into the world.
“I know how hard a nights sleep can be so if I can heal that person then I can also heal knowing that they are safe.” – Zachary Geyshick
Zach learned the tradition of making dreamcatchers from his family members at age 8, and later learned the technique for the double dreamcatcher from Isaac Raish in Fargo, North Dakota. Isaac’s words to Zach were “if it is meant for you, it will come to you,” and come to him it did. The double dreamcatchers are Zach’s favourite to make because they represent two paths and that “no matter what path we take in life we can always find our true path.”
The Douglas Family Art Centre currently has two other dreamcatchers created by Zach on display: a double dreamcatcher in the entrance of the building and a large single dreamcatcher in the studio. Be sure to take some time to admire them on your next visit!
No registration required. Regular gallery admission rates apply. If you are interested in learning how to make a (single) dreamcatcher, there will be a workshop with Zach on Saturday, February 15 from 12:30-4:30pm.
