The Muse is pleased to present, in partnership with TryLight Theatre Co., a reading of Kingfisher Days by author Susan Coyne.

Just over 20 years ago, this beautiful little book was published. Written by award-winning actor and writer Susan Coyne, the memoir recounts one magical summer on Coney Island on Lake of the Woods.

At the time, Susan Coyne was a curious five-year-old who discovered an overgrown stone fireplace in a hedge near her family’s camp. Her father told her it was the home of Uncle Joe Spondoolak, an elf who had moved in after the cottage had burned down. As the self-appointed keeper of the hearth, Susan takes on the responsibility of cleaning up the fireplace and leaving small gifts for the elves. As expected, the gifts disappear and then…a letter appears, addressed

To Helen Susan Cameron Coyne: Greetings

Her Majesty, Queen Mab, has instructed me to thank you for making a home for all her people.

What follows is an exchange of letters between young Susan and the young fairy princess. The magical story also involves an elderly neighbour, Mr. Moir, who shares his knowledge of fanciful characters with his young friend. This is a delightful tale of friendship, imagination, and the joys of a Lake of the Woods summer.

We are pleased to provide complementary programming to TryLight’s theatrical production of Kingfisher Days which will be presented April 22-29.
