Art in the Park: Chalk Mural with Amanda McCavour
by Shelby Smith
Back in September the Douglas Family Art Centre had the pleasure of welcoming Toronto-based artist Amanda McCavour to Kenora. During her visit, Amanda assisted staff with installing her exhibition, attended the opening reception, talked about her art practice, and ran a couple of fun workshops. One of these workshops was a chalk mural in Memorial Park, on the grounds between the Lake of the Woods Museum and Douglas Family Art Centre.
The chalk mural featured radial motifs that reflect the radial patterns present in Amanda’s installation, Bloom. Using DIY chalk paint (we have the recipe in case you want to make your own!) and sidewalk chalk, we transformed the various paths leading to the Douglas Family Art Centre into explosions of colour and joy. Approximately 50 people joined in to help complete the mural, each adding their own personal touches. While the mural has since washed away, we are happy to have these photos to remember the day.
Amanda McCavour’s installation Bloom is on display at the Douglas Family Art Centre now through December 2024. Click here to learn more.
